This console by Garrido was crafted using traditional silversmithing techniques, including piercing, cold bending and filing. Invisible brazed joints provided continuity to the form, which was selectively polished to enhance its geometry and interaction with light.
Built from a composition of precisely folded planes, the piece captures and reflects light across contrasting polished and textured surfaces, creating a constantly changing perception of form. Inspired by the faceted geometry of cut stones and the language of contemporary architecture, Folds transforms metal into an interplay of volume, reflection and movement.

DESIGN AND IDEATION - Every GARRIDO creation begins with an idea, explored through sketches and preparatory drawings.Templates and mock-ups in cardboard or brass allow the artisan to refine shapes and proportions before working in silver.Today, 3D design tools complement this process, helping visualize complex forms, though the essence of the design remains rooted in hand-drawn study and careful observation.
MODELING - Every piece begins with an idea translated into form through hand modeling. Using cork, cardboard, or wax, the artisan creates a three-dimensional prototype that defines proportion, balance, and volume before the metalwork begins.This stage bridges imagination and material reality — allowing refinement of the design and ensuring that every detail serves both structure and aesthetics.
PIERCING - Piercing is used to create openwork or remove sections of metal, often for decorative or structural purposes. After marking the design on the surface, small holes are drilled, and a fine steel saw is threaded through to cut the intended pattern.The saw moves vertically in a controlled to-and-fro rhythm. Once complete, the edges are refined by filing to ensure a clean, precise outline.
EMBOSSING - Embossing shapes metal from the reverse side by hammering it into an open iron die or mold with an engraved or curved recess.The metal conforms to the pattern, forming raised reliefs or contours.This method simplifies complex shaping while preserving the sharpness of detail, giving the surface a sculptural and tactile presence.
FORGING, HAMMERING AND PLANISHING - Forging gives life to metal through rhythmic hammering, gradually creating volume and curvature from a flat sheet. Each blow modifies the metal’s density and elasticity, demanding precision and control to achieve both strength and fluidity. Hammering establishes the initial form, while planishing refines it, smoothing surfaces and correcting irregularities. For curved pieces, blows are applied from the inside out; for linear works, cold bending defines edges and planes.The result is a seamless surface where technique and design unite.
BLAZING AND WELDING - Brazing joins metal pieces by melting a filler metal that flows between the components, creating a strong and durable bond. Surfaces are carefully cleaned beforehand, and vent holes are made in hollow objects to avoid pressure buildup.Welding fuses the edges of metals directly, forming a permanent connection.The joint is then refined by filing and polishing until it blends seamlessly with the surrounding surface.
COLD BENDING - Used for designs defined by straight lines and sharp angles, cold bending involves scoring and folding the metal sheet along precisely marked edges. Employing a fine triangular-ended punch and a set square, the craftsman bends the material without heat, ensuring accuracy and consistency.The final joints are soldered to form a continuous, perfectly aligned surface.
THROWING - Throwing, or metal turning, shapes metal sheets on a horizontal lathe using burnishing tools.The sheet is pressed against a rotating mandrel — typically made of bronze, wood, or nylon — to create symmetrical forms such as cylinders or spheres. Grease is applied to protect the surface as the artisan manipulates the burnishing tool along the metal. When the metal hardens from friction, it is re-fired and cooled before continuing. Damián Garrido mastered both mandrel-based and freehand turning, achieving precise, elegant forms through control, rhythm, and repetition.
ENGRAVING - Engraving involves cutting fine lines or motifs directly into the metal surface using sharp burins. It allows for precise ornamental detail or subtle inscriptions, revealing contrasts between polished and matte areas.This technique demands a steady hand and visual sensitivity, bringing a personal and expressive dimension to the work.
CHASING - Chasing is the art of decorating metal surfaces without removing material. Using small chisels and hammers, the craftsman embosses patterns, textures, or reliefs directly onto the piece. Each mark is deliberate, guided by both technical skill and artistic intuition. The resulting surface captures light and shadow, adding depth and vitality to the form.
FILING - Filing defines the purity of each contour.The craftsman uses files of varying shapes and grains — flat, round, triangular, or semicircular — to refine surfaces, perfect junctions, and remove imperfections left by previous processes.The technique requires controlled, rhythmic motion to preserve the geometry of the design while revealing its precise edges and transitions.
POLISHING - The final stage — and often the most time-consuming — polishing perfects the surface and reveals the characteristic mirror-like brilliance of GARRIDO. Using a sequence of brushes, cloths, and buffing wheels of increasing softness, the craftsman gradually eliminates marks from hammering, filing, and soldering.The process requires patience and sensitivity, bringing forth a finish that reflects both mastery and respect for the material.
